In her first major television appearance since the January shooting attack, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was asked by ABC "20/20" host Diane Sawyer whether she plans to return to Congress. But the Arizona Democrat's injuries hindered her reply.
Giffords, who continues to work on regaining her speech and mobility after being shot in the head at a Tucson, Ariz. town hall event, struggled to answer Sawyer's question. "Better," she said, sighed and looked up, searching for words. Husband Mark Kelly, who sat beside his wife during the interview which aired Monday night, finished her sentence for her. "She wants to get better," he said.
"So you think to yourself, 'I'll go back to Congress if I get better?'" "Yes. Yes. Yes." Giffords replied. You can watch the video below via ABC:
Kelly has long tamped down expectations of his wife's return to Congress as questions remain regarding whether the congresswoman will seek re-election to the House or possibly vie for U.S. Senate. But he was more emphatic this week in an interview with the Arizona Republic, saying it's "unlikely" she will run for Senate.
As for himself and his personal political plans, he told the newspaper: "I don't know ... Not anytime soon."
Monday's interview marked the first time the general public was able to see Giffords speak, walk, interact, laugh and smile. Once known as the most positive member of Congress, Giffords continued to express optimism throughout the interview, adding that she isn't angry about what happened. "Life," she said when asked if she's angry.
Kelly revealed that amid the vitriol surrounding the 2010 election, Giffords told her husband, "someday, I'm really worried that somebody's going to come up to me at one of these events with a gun."
